Sexy piano on YouTube

If you thought that YouTube was the place to watch pop stars, parodies, and all things a little lowbrow, think again! I had no idea that this might be the place to stop by and pick up sexy piano clips, but thanks to an Alfred Cortot video on Vivien’s blog, I have discovered a database of many truly historical clips. If, like me, you think that on the whole, they don’t make them they used to, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to discover Cziffra getting sweaty over Chopin and some grainy but nonetheless incredible Horowitz. It’s all very, very exciting!

A video clip of Glenn Gould is infinitely watchable. Someone has my copy of the newest, definitive biography, so I can’t quote, but as I watched this clip I remembered comments made about the great pianist to the effect that he was rather sexless. Well, I think this is the sexiest piano playing I’ve ever seen on video. The sheer individuality and intensity of Gould’s style, where passion grows from precision, have always captivated me. To see one of my favourite recordings in the flesh, so to speak, is a delight. Watch out for the wonderful part between 1:10 - 2:00, where lips slightly parted, eyes closed, his pulse clearly quickening, he massages the keys in an irresistable fashion.

I also enjoyed the Hélène Grimaud Bach-Busoni Chaconne. Her interpretation has all the measured strength and energy required by that weighty piece. Has the word “feminine” ever been used as a compliment in musical criticism? I would say that this performance has an air of the classy, graceful emotional assurance that’s such a part of modern womanhood.

It’s well worth going to YouTube for running a search of your favourite artist, discovering repertoire (which I’m about to go and do) and discovering new artists. I spent hours on there, and intend to spend many more.

Probably best not to type in “bollywood gilbert and sullivan” though - from a previous encounter, I can tell you that the results are just plain wierd.

For now, D. x

False alarm

So my other half didn’t have his wisdom teeth out today. (Just as I was getting to grips with my hand blender.) From a purley selfish point of view I am happy about this: I can keep my personal volume up to the normal level, and our coupledom can function as normal, with him the strong, quiet, caring one, and me the slightly needy one who occasionally falls apart. However when he does have them out in May - in two goes - I won’t be much use as I have an important exam the day after round one, and then I’m scarpering off to Prague just after round two, leaving him to walk around Manchester looking like he’s been hit by a jealous husband… I give girlfriends a bad name!
