Un viaggio a Roma
For fresh bread, naughty desserts, sexy antipasti, and all things to do with Italian cooking, I can strongly recommend Roma Delicatessen.
It’s in an inauspicious location near the Whitefield Metro stop on Bury New Road, but you’ll find yourself attracted in by the coffee makers, cakes and panettone in the window (and not just at Christmastime either). The deli counter is lovely, with sausage, meat, cheese and desserts, as well as freshly baked bread and fresh antipasti. Biscuits, chocolate, pasta galore - all diferrent types - and lovely groceries, perfect if you love cooking. Not too pricey either. I wish I could tell you about the ice-cream there, but I was dragged out of the shop before I had chance to peruse it properly!
Here’s a Manchester Online Review of the café, from last year. We don’t go to the café however, preferring to buy goodies and cook at home - last night I made risotto for the first time, from the Silver Spoon, a definitive Italian cookbook. We listened to Cavalleria Rusticana as we ate, and then we used the Bialetti espresso maker we bought from there months ago. A perfect Italian evening.
