Tickets!

Yesterday I bought

  • 2 tickets to see Manon Lescaut at the Prague State Opera on Sunday
  • 2 tickets to take a train from Prague to Krakow on Monday
  • 2 tickets to watch the Simpsons movie (well I don’t want to die of culture overload do I?)

and only tried to pay by using the word for swim once!

This fills me with hope.

Now there’s some more language geekery I’m afraid, a question aimed at you all, but especially any visiting language experts - you know who you are!

As I said, I’m going to Poland next week. Do you think I’d get a better reception by speaking English, or by speaking Czech? (I’m afraid I only know yes, please, and thank you in Polish. I didn’t try to learn last year as I think two new languages at a time is enough!) Jez will be speaking some Polish (as he did in Prague!) but I’m not sure whether people would think I was being considerate, amusing, or just plain offensive if I spoke Czech there!

  1. Here’s a good game… since you can only say ‘yes please’ and ‘thank you’ in Polish. See what happens if you only use those 2 phrases for your entire time… Hmmm, maybe not. You could try it for an afternoon or something…

  2. It’s not a game, it’s reality!

  3. Ah crap, I knew enough Polish to order beers when I was there…I think it’s bivo. Most of the people I encountered spoke English, but there seems to be quite a crossover between Czech and Polish. So if the words are pretty similar, try the czech version. And smile. Lots!!
Awwww Krakow is amazing. I want to go back now :( Go up to the castle and see the dragon! How long are you going to be there?

  4. Ooh, I’m glad you’ve been! We can get all reminiscing-y together
I’ll arrive on Monday night, and leave on Saturday night. The language thing - Czech is pivo - so it sounds like we’re going to be ok! Phew xxx

  5. Oh wow, if you’re going for that long, try and go to the salt mines. I can’t remember exactly what they’re called, but it’s about an hours bus ride from Krakow. I can try and find out if you want? It sounds really lame, but it’s amazing. Worth it, I’d say.
We also went to Auschwitz when we were there; it’s an experience, but it depends what you’re looking for. I think it’s something to see, but don’t feel you have to.
OHHHHH it’s so nice there!! I’m all jealous now *sulks*

  6. Piwo…that’s Polish for beer…you’ll do fine with Thank you and Yes Please. Poles should be thrilled you know THAT much. Enjoy Krakow… and anywhere else you’ll see in Poland! Krakow at this time of year should be booo-ti-ful!
